The Communications Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency is outraged by recent attempts by elements within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to recast Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson as a victim rather than the architect of one of the bloodiest political legacies in Ghana’s Fourth Republic. Let it be stated with absolute clarity and unwavering conviction that Hawa Koomson is not a victim but rather a known political aggressor, a repeat offender, and a woman whose name has become synonymous with violence, impunity, and unrepentant lawlessness
Let the records reflect that in the Ablekuma North rerun, the violence that erupted was not spontaneous but it was directly triggered by the reckless actions of Hawa Koomson, who stormed the polling station carrying a weapon, specifically pepper spray, and compounded the tension with provocative and inflammatory language. Her conduct was not only irresponsible but deliberately calculated to intimidate and incite chaos. It is therefore both outrageous and infuriating that she and her enablers now have the audacity to demand public sympathy and call for an apology from President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress. Such insolence is an insult to the victims of her violence and a mockery of justice. This is not only an affront to the victims of her brutality but a slap in the face of justice.
We say this without hesitation, Hawa Koomson deserves no sympathy. She deserves no apology. She deserves no national pity. What she deserves is public condemnation, criminal investigation, prosecution, and eventual imprisonment for the countless acts of political terror committed under her watch.
In 2020, she brazenly stormed a polling center in her constituency during the voter registration exercise and discharged a loaded weapon in the full view of Ghanaian citizens. She fired live rounds into a peaceful crowd, endangering lives and sowing panic. She did not deny it. She went on live television and admitted to the crime with zero remorse and alarming arrogance. Instead of being arrested, she was rewarded with ministerial appointment by President Akufo-Addo, sending a clear message that violence against political opponents is a virtue in the NPP.
Under her iron-fisted and bloodstained control of Awutu Senya East, political violence was not an exception, it became the norm. In 2024, Hawa Koomson’s hired thugs unleashed mayhem on the people of Kasoa.
During that election, a young man named Mohamed Yusif Larry was shot and killed in cold blood. His only crime was being a known supporter of the NDC. His murder remains uninvestigated. His killers walk freely in our streeets. And the one who orchestrated the chaos, Hawa Koomson, continues to parade herself as a politician.
As if that was not enough, another innocent Ghanaian, Innusah Bukari, was attacked so savagely by her hooligans that he lost his leg. His amputation is not just a personal tragedy, it is a national shame. It was not the result of an unfortunate clash. It was the product of a well-orchestrated attack rooted in political vengeance and executed with surgical cruelty. Yet again, no one was held responsible. No arrests were made. No compensation was offered. And not even a single word of regret came from the woman at the center of it all.
What is even more damning is the fact that members of her own party, loyal NPP supporters and well-known allies of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong have confessed publicly that they fear for their lives whenever Hawa Koomson is present. When even her own colleagues in the NPP believe she is dangerous, the rest of the nation must pay attention.
Her playbook has always been the same, import thugs, intimidate the electorate, terrorize opponents, and hide behind state security. These are not allegations. These are lived experiences of the people of Awutu Senya East and beyond. Her legacy is a trail of blood, tears, bullets, and broken homes. And now, unbelievably, she wants Ghanaians to feel sorry for her?
We must never fall for this deception. We must never reward brutality with sympathy. We must never let the perpetrators of violence walk away as victims simply because the tide has turned against them.
The NDC in Awutu Senya East is calling on the Ghana Police Service, the Criminal Investigations Department, and the Attorney-General to immediately reopen all outstanding cases connected to Hawa Koomson’s political reign of terror. The murder of Mohamed Yusif Larry must not go unpunished. The amputation of Innusah Bukari must not be swept under the carpet. Her public admission of firing a gun at a polling station must lead to a proper prosecution under the laws of this land.
This is not a matter of politics. This is a matter of life and death. This is a matter of justice. This is a matter of restoring dignity to our democracy.
We also call on His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to ignore any backroom attempts to pressure him into extending an olive branch to Hawa Koomson. There can be no reconciliation where there has been no repentance. There can be no apology to one who has never apologized. The only thing Hawa Koomson deserves from the government is a summons to appear in court. Nothing more. Nothing less.
