The Central Regional National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has confirmed that 4,636 people have been displaced due to recent floods and fire outbreaks in the region. According to the Central Regional NADMO Director, Mr. Kwesi Dawood, the affected residents are currently seeking shelter in churches, mosques, classrooms, and with relatives.
Mr. Dawood lamented the challenging situation, revealing that five people were trapped when a dilapidated two-story building collapsed in Cape Coast following a seven-hour torrential rain. Unfortunately, two of the trapped individuals, a 79-year-old woman and an 84-year-old man, lost their lives, while the other three are receiving treatment at a hospital.
The NADMO Director disclosed that 11 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Central Region have been affected by the flood and are in urgent need of support from NGOs, private individuals, and philanthropists.
In response to the disaster, the NADMO Directorate has already demolished three dilapidated building structures in the region. Mr. Dawood announced plans to collaborate with the Coordinating Council to demolish all old, dilapidated buildings in the region in the coming days to prevent future disasters during the rainy season.
The NADMO's proactive measures aim to mitigate the impact of disasters and ensure public safety in the region.
